Where to Stay in Shibuya: The Three Areas

Shibuya’s hotels fall into three areas: right by the station, Dogenzaka and Sakuragaoka to the southwest, and north toward Miyashita Park and Yoyogi Park. Each gives your stay a different feel.

Station area: maximum convenience

Steps from the Scramble Crossing and the Hachiko statue, with JR, Tokyo Metro, Tokyu and Keio lines all on your doorstep. Some hotels connect directly to the station, which is ideal for first-timers and rainy days. Shibuya Excel Hotel Tokyu and SHIBUYA STREAM HOTEL are here.

Dogenzaka and Sakuragaoka: nightlife and views

Southwest of the station is a lively area packed with restaurants and bars, so you can stay out late and walk home. Just south of the station, Sakuragaoka has high-rise hotels with views and an extended-stay hotel with kitchens.

Hotel Indigo Tokyo Shibuya, Cerulean Tower Tokyu Hotel, Hyatt House Tokyo Shibuya and Shibuya Granbell Hotel are in this area.

North of the station toward Harajuku, you’re close to Miyashita Park, Cat Street’s fashion boutiques and Yoyogi Park. Great for shopping and cafe-hopping. sequence MIYASHITA PARK and TRUNK(HOTEL) YOYOGI PARK are here.

As a rough guide, expect US$100–250 per night for affordable hotels, US$150–500 for midrange to upscale, and US$600+ for luxury. Prices rise in cherry blossom season and over New Year, and rooms with views sell out first, so book early.

Standard rooms in Tokyo are smaller than in most US or European cities. If you’re traveling with large suitcases, check the room size before you book.

Tips Before You Book a Hotel in Shibuya

Want a Scramble Crossing view? Check the room type

Even at hotels that overlook the crossing, not every room has the view. If there’s a room type labeled Scramble Crossing View, choose it when you book.

Know your exit at Shibuya Station

Shibuya Station has a huge number of exits. A 5-minute walk from the right exit can take 15 minutes from the wrong one, so check the name of the exit nearest your hotel (such as the Hachiko Exit) before you arrive.

Getting around Tokyo and to the airports

Harajuku and Omotesando are one stop away, and you can reach Shinjuku and Ginza without changing trains. Get a Suica or PASMO IC card, which you can also add to the Wallet app on an iPhone.

Travel times from Shibuya Station

Approximate time on the train. Transfers and waiting time not included.

Tokyo sights (by train)

Harajuku~2 min
Omotesando~2 min
Shinjuku~7 min

Airports

HanedaTrain 40–50 min
NaritaNarita Express ~90 min

Airport Limousine Buses leave from Shibuya Mark City.

You can reach both airports by train, but with big suitcases the Airport Limousine Bus from Shibuya Mark City is easier. If you have a lot of luggage, ask your hotel about luggage forwarding, a common service in Japan.

Out late? Stay within walking distance

Tokyo’s trains stop running around midnight. If you plan to stay out late at Nonbei Yokocho or Center Gai, pick a hotel you can walk back to. Taxis are easy to find but cost more late at night.

No tipping in Japan

Tipping isn’t expected at hotels, restaurants or taxis in Japan. The price you see is the price you pay.

So, Which Shibuya Hotel Should You Book?

Start by deciding what matters most: being next to the station, nightlife and views, or parks and shopping.

For the station and the Scramble Crossing view, book Shibuya Excel Hotel Tokyu. For a station-connected hotel at a fair price, choose SHIBUYA STREAM HOTEL.

For views and quiet, go for Cerulean Tower Tokyu Hotel; for Shibuya’s culture, Hotel Indigo Tokyo Shibuya. Families and longer stays will love Hyatt House Tokyo Shibuya.
