Where to Stay in Naha: The Three Areas

Naha’s hotels fall into three areas: the harbor side of Asahibashi, Kumoji and Nishi near the airport, Kokusai-dori and Makishi in the center, and Shintoshin (Omoromachi) to the north plus Shuri to the east.

The Yui Rail monorail runs from Naha Airport through Asahibashi, Kenchomae, Makishi and Omoromachi to beyond Shuri, so you can reach the main spots without a car. IC cards like Suica work on it.

Naha splits into the harbor side (Asahibashi and Kumoji) close to the airport, the Kokusai-dori and Makishi area in the center, Shintoshin to the north and Shuri to the east. The Yui Rail monorail runs from the airport all the way to Shuri. Tap a number to jump to that hotel.

Asahibashi, Kumoji and Nishi: closest to the airport

The part of the city nearest Naha Airport. Asahibashi has Naha Bus Terminal, with buses all over the island, and Kokusai-dori is within walking distance.

RIHGA Royal Gran Okinawa, Nest Hotel Naha Kumoji and Loisir Hotel Naha are in this area.

Kokusai-dori and Makishi: food and shopping

Naha’s liveliest street, lined with souvenir shops and Okinawan restaurants, with Makishi Public Market and Tsuboya Yachimun Street (pottery shops) nearby. On a first visit, this is the most convenient area.

Hotel JAL City Naha and Hyatt Regency Naha, Okinawa are here.

Shintoshin and Shuri: quiet and history

Shintoshin (Omoromachi) to the north is a newer district of big shopping malls, while Shuri to the east is the historic home of Shuri Castle, seat of the Ryukyu kings. Both are calmer than Kokusai-dori and connected to the center by the Yui Rail.

The Naha Terrace and DoubleTree by Hilton Naha Shuri Castle are here.

As a rough guide, expect US$70–200 per night for affordable hotels, US$100–350 for midrange to upscale, and around US$160–400 for luxury. Prices rise and rooms sell out early during Japanese summer vacation and public holidays.

Tips Before You Book a Hotel in Naha

You can get around Naha by monorail

The Yui Rail takes about 12 minutes from Naha Airport to Kenchomae and about 16 minutes to Makishi. If you’re only staying in Naha, you don’t need a rental car.

Travel times from Naha Airport

Yui Rail times are time on the train; driving times assume the expressway. Waiting time and traffic not included.

Into Naha (Yui Rail)

Kenchomae~12 min
Makishi~16 min

Resorts and sights (by car)

Nanjo~35–40 min
Onna~60 min
Churaumi~2 hr

Traffic in Naha is often heavy in the morning and evening, so leave extra time when driving.

For Churaumi Aquarium or the resorts of central and northern Okinawa, rent a car or join a bus tour. If you’re switching hotels between Naha and a resort, ask about luggage forwarding, a common service in Japan.

Driving? Check parking and traffic

Most hotel parking in Naha costs extra, and some lots can’t be reserved. If you’re coming by car, check whether there’s parking and what it costs before you book. Driving in Japan also requires an International Driving Permit for most visitors, and traffic keeps to the left.

Traffic in Naha gets heavy in the morning and evening, so give yourself extra time on the day you return your rental car.

Pairing Naha with a beach resort? Start and end in Naha

The resorts in Onna and Nago are about an hour’s drive from the airport. Spending your arrival night and your last night in Naha keeps the trip from turning into a race to the airport.

No tipping in Japan

Tipping isn’t expected at hotels, restaurants or taxis in Japan. The price you see is the price you pay.

So, Which Naha Hotel Should You Book?

Start by deciding what matters most: easy airport access, food on Kokusai-dori, or quiet and history.

For a no-transfer ride from the airport, book RIHGA Royal Gran Okinawa. To save money, choose Nest Hotel Naha Kumoji. With a car and a love of pools and hot-spring baths, go for Loisir Hotel Naha.

For the heart of Kokusai-dori, stay at Hotel JAL City Naha. For a polished city hotel, choose Hyatt Regency Naha, Okinawa.

For a quiet luxury stay, book The Naha Terrace. To be near Shuri Castle, choose DoubleTree by Hilton Naha Shuri Castle.
