The two sides of the station feel quite different, so it’s worth choosing on purpose.

West Exit: close to the station, a little calmer
The West Exit side has the Tobu department store, plenty of restaurants and a slightly calmer feel. It’s where you’ll find hotels right by the station, plus options with kitchens and washing machines.
Hotel Metropolitan Tokyo Ikebukuro, hotel hisoca ikebukuro, Tokyu Stay Ikebukuro and MIMARU Tokyo Ikebukuro are here.
East Exit and Sunshine City: anime, games and family fun
This is the side most visitors come for. From the East Exit, Sunshine 60 Street, a busy pedestrian shopping street, leads to Sunshine City, a giant complex with an aquarium, an observation deck, the Pokémon Center Mega Tokyo store and Namja Town, an indoor theme park.
On the way you’ll pass Animate Ikebukuro, the flagship of Japan’s biggest chain of anime and manga stores, packed with comics, figures and character goods. Just beyond it is Otome Road (Maiden Road), a street of anime, manga and game shops aimed mainly at female fans. Think of it as Ikebukuro’s answer to Akihabara.
Sunshine City Prince Hotel and Dormy Inn Ikebukuro are on this side.
Otsuka: neighborhood Tokyo, one stop away
One stop from Ikebukuro on the JR Yamanote Line, Otsuka is a quiet neighborhood of old shopping streets and small local restaurants. OMO5 Tokyo Otsuka is here.
As a rough guide, expect US$70–200 per night for affordable hotels and US$130–450 for midrange to upscale. You’ll usually get more for your money than in Shinjuku or Shibuya. Prices rise in cherry blossom season and over New Year, so book early.
Standard rooms in Tokyo are smaller than in most US or European cities. If you’re traveling with large suitcases or kids, check the room size before you book.

A stop on the Toden Arakawa Line, one of Tokyo’s last streetcars, is close by. A fun pick if you want to see everyday Tokyo rather than the tourist sights.

Tips Before You Book a Hotel in Ikebukuro
Know your exit at Ikebukuro Station
Ikebukuro Station is served by JR, Tokyo Metro, Tobu and Seibu lines and has a huge number of exits. A 5-minute walk from the right exit can take 15 minutes from the wrong one.
Before you arrive, check whether your hotel is on the East Exit or West Exit side, and follow the signs for that side.
Seibu is east, Tobu is west
Here’s a classic Ikebukuro trap: the Seibu department store (its name literally means “west”) is at the East Exit, and the Tobu department store (literally “east”) is at the West Exit. When you meet friends or look for your hotel, go by East Exit or West Exit, not by the store names.
For anime fans and families: plan your East Exit day
Sunshine City, Animate and Otome Road are all within walking distance of each other, so you can cover them in one day. Weekends and school holidays get very crowded, especially the Pokémon Center and the aquarium, so go on a weekday morning if you can.
Otome Road is lined with smaller specialty shops, many selling secondhand manga and character goods. It’s fun to browse even if you don’t read Japanese.
Getting around Tokyo and to the airports
The JR Yamanote Line takes you to Shinjuku, Shibuya and Ueno without changing trains, and the Tokyo Metro Marunouchi Line runs to Tokyo Station. The Tobu Tojo Line goes to Kawagoe, a town of old merchant houses that makes an easy day trip. Get a Suica or PASMO IC card, which you can also add to the Wallet app on an iPhone.
Travel times from Ikebukuro Station

Tokyo sights (by train)
Airports
Airport Limousine Buses to Haneda and Narita leave from the front of Hotel Metropolitan Tokyo Ikebukuro.
For Narita, the fastest route is the Yamanote Line to Nippori, then the Keisei Skyliner. With big suitcases, the Airport Limousine Bus from the front of Hotel Metropolitan is easier. If you have a lot of luggage, ask your hotel about luggage forwarding, a common service in Japan.
No tipping in Japan
Tipping isn’t expected at hotels, restaurants or taxis in Japan. The price you see is the price you pay.
So, Which Ikebukuro Hotel Should You Book?

Start by deciding what matters most: being next to the station, Sunshine City and anime, or a room that works like an apartment.
For the station and the airport bus, book Hotel Metropolitan Tokyo Ikebukuro. For a private in-room sauna, choose hotel hisoca ikebukuro.
Families heading to Sunshine City should go for Sunshine City Prince Hotel. To try a Japanese hot-spring bath on a budget, book Dormy Inn Ikebukuro.
For laundry on a longer trip, pick Tokyu Stay Ikebukuro. Families and groups who want a kitchen will love MIMARU Tokyo Ikebukuro. To see neighborhood Tokyo, stay at OMO5 Tokyo Otsuka.
